A brother and sister get up early to see the sun rise and tell readers about its movements throughout the day At the end of the day they receive a little science lesson from their mother about how the Earth moves and how day and night are made possible The kids try an experiment to see science in action by using an apple to represent the Earth as they turn it around and around under the light of a lamp Illustrations look like pastels. Great illustrations It s a story that teaches about the sun If I were looking for a book to introduce the sun to children, I would look for somethingcontemporary i.e The Sun Is Kind of a Big Deal This was published in the early 1960s Great illustrations It s a story that teaches about the sun If I were looking for a book to introduce the sun to children, I would look for somethingcontemporary i.e The Sun Is Kind of a Big Deal This was published in the early 1960s #Free Book ⚧ The Day We Saw The Sun Come Up Ë A brother and sister watch the sunrise and sunset in the country and at bedtime they learn about the earth s rotation This book had some outstanding illustrations that I thought were really powerful because of the colors and techniques used to draw them Russell describes shapes as bringing out emotion and that is what this books illustrations did throughout This book is supposed to beof a relaxed read and the pictures showed that because a lot of them were in circular shapes Russell says that circular shapes are therelaxed shapes because they showcomfort There is a page where the kids are This book had some outstanding illustrations that I thought were really powerful because of the colors and techniques used to draw them Russell describes shapes as bringing out emotion and that is what this books illustrations did throughout This book is supposed to beof a relaxed read and the pictures showed that because a lot of them were in circular shapes Russell says that circular shapes are therelaxed shapes because they showcomfort There is a page where the kids are running into the sun in the morning and this is drawn in a circle which, suggests comfort Russell also explains that using colors can create a feeling of warmth In this book there is a lot of color use When then the sun comes up it shows bright colors which suggests happiness and when the sun goes down it represents warm colors, such oranges, yellows, and pinks While in the beginning of the book the illustrations showsurrealism, as Russell would say The colors used are dark and they are like that to represent that the sun still has not come out I think this was a good technique because the illustrator could have put lamps or flashlights in the pictures but, instead he made it so that it was obvious the book was about learning the sun Another brilliant thing that the illustrator did was he used watercolors for the pictures Russell suggests that this shows soft and delicate pictures I agree because this book was not intended to be an action book, it is intended to be relaxing and educational for children The educational part is my favorite thing about this book This is possibly why I gave it the rating that I did At the end when the boy does his own experiment to explain the science his parents taught him is a great idea This is because if I am reading this book to my class they will most likely want to try this experiment because we read about it and luckily this is an easy experiment to preform If I ever do a lesson on the sun I would love to use this book in class and I would recommend it to other teachers as well We waited months to get this one from the closed stacks of my library I love the artwork It is all so good at capturing the magic of watching the sun come up.I also like that Goudey included notes about incorporating science into the book itself A simple way to teach kids lessons relating to nature. My daughter and I really liked this book Cute old fashioned story about a boy and his sister that go exploring together one morning I liked that this book has educational elements too Good, sweet, old fashioned, and wholesome. 1962 Caldecott Honor Book This is the first book I ran across that my public library did not have and I ve read about 225 of the Winner and Honor books I was wondering when that would happen and which book it would be I m a little surprised it s this one I ve read better, but I ve also read much worse I found a copy at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee This is a quiet, sweet story about a brother and sister watching the sun rise for the first time Maybe it s too wordy for today s 1962 Caldecott Honor Book This is the first book I ran across that my public library did not have and I ve read about 225 of the Winner and Honor books I was wondering when that would happen and which book it would be I m a little surprised it s this one I ve read better, but I ve also read much worse I found a copy at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee This is a quiet, sweet story about a brother and sister watching the sun rise for the first time Maybe it s too wordy for today s readers, but I like the story and the pictures are pleasant This would be a great introduction in a science class dealing with the Earth s rotation At the end of the book, the boy and girl mimic the sun and Earth by shining a light on an apple and rotating the apple I think this is a sweet book that shows children exploring and learning about nature and science This is a cute book about the adventures of a brother and sister The book teaches good concepts on how the earth and sun cooperate together At the end, the boy and girl use a flashlight and apple to see how the sun shines on part of the earth at one time This would be the perfect book to read when presenting a lesson on the sun After reading the book, you could easily demonstrate the same example of the flashlight and the apple in your classroom I would suggest this book for that purpose P This is a cute book about the adventures of a brother and sister The book teaches good concepts on how the earth and sun cooperate together At the end, the boy and girl use a flashlight and apple to see how the sun shines on part of the earth at one time This would be the perfect book to read when presenting a lesson on the sun After reading the book, you could easily demonstrate the same example of the flashlight and the apple in your classroom I would suggest this book for that purpose Picture Book Science Fiction A wonderful story of two siblings who get up early and watch the sun rise They look at their shadows, play outdoors and then later they talk about the sun rising with their mum She explains how the earth turns and how night and day are made by shadow. The story was a wonderful mix of poetic beauty and factual science, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful, I will look out forby this author and this illustrator Read on openlibrary The copy I read had the pages mixed up which was a p A wonderful story of two siblings who get up early and watch the sun rise They look at their shadows, play outdoors and then later they talk about the sun rising with their mum She explains how the earth turns and how night and day are made by shadow. The story was a wonderful mix of poetic beauty and factual science, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful, I will look out forby this author and this illustrator Read on openlibrary The copy I read had the pages mixed up which was a pity I read this book on loan from the Internet Archive.Another lovely book from Goudey, this one about the sun and the earth s movement She explained this all through the story of a boy and girl who get up early to watch the sun come up, then observe it and it s effects throughout the day The illustrations are truly beautiful, and manage to be both engaging and explanatory.
