interesting POVs, it is mostly centered around Vall who is of course our main hero, oraccurately, anti hero, and we follow him on his personal quest Abandoned by his father at an early age Vall had to fight for survival under the tutelage of a ruthless mentor named Kalor who tortured him and forced him to steal and harm others. We learn a lot about his past through a well placed flashback chapters which contributed to the story nicely without disrupting the flow He is also adept at Essence, an ancient magic sealed away a long time ago, now mysteriously finding its way back in the world of Elemor I won t spoil or reveal much of the story but I ll just say that what seemed to be a simple quest turned out to be something farbigger What is so great about this read is the simplicity of the narrative Story has a nice flow and there are plenty of surprises and twists to be found within these pages World building managed to immerse me in the surroundings without the unnecessary info dumps There is plenty of thrilling action and occasional violence which isn t graphic so it s perfectly fine even for a sensitive reader.Bottom line if you enjoy reading stories with assassin as the main character, I think it s safe to say you ll enjoy this one It s fun, intriguing, and the ending promises no shortage of thrills, which I m sure the author has prepared, for the next installment.I d like to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review I had a great time reading it and I m looking forward to reading the sequel @Download Ø The Red Heir ⛅ Long ago, when the Essence of magic gave Elemor its power, the world saw prosperity, ingenuity, and wonder Peace can only last so long, however The darkness always seems to find a way to surface Vall, the once most feared assassin in all of Helforn, seeks out what many say to be the biggest mystery since the loss of magic a thousand years ago The doors Hundreds of them at first, now down to a few Doors that would not open for any key or amount of force Doors that would one day lead to somewhere known and familiar, only to be completely impassable and sealed the next But what they didn t know, and couldn t understand, was that there was one person who had been through the doors One person with a key Vall Now he seeks answers Answers to why the world is withering away, and why magic is gone He vows to uncover Elemor s past and discover why his father went missing all those years ago Some secrets, however, should never be uncovered Some secrets are kept hidden for a reason I would like to well thought out and had a nice flow to it The flashback chapters were well placed and added nice depth to the storyline I never felt impatient or confused throughout the entire book It held my depth to the storyline I never felt impatient or confused throughout the entire book It held my attention from the first page to the last The story is centered around Vall Red, also known as The Terror of Helforn Vall was abandoned by his father at a young age, and raised to be an assassin in the city of Helforn Vall can also wield the magical power of the Essence, which has been gone from the land of Elemor for centuries With Vall s training and unique abilities he is desperately trying to find out what happened to his father all those years ago, but his search may uncoverthan he could ever imagine. How can you go wrong with a mixture of magic, mystery, and action Well, you can t when it comes to The Red Heir I recommend it for any fantasy lover, or book lover in general I am already looking forward to book 2.4 stars DNF 25% I stopped and started this several times to try to build some momentum but just couldn t get into it It wasn t all bad just couldn t keep my interest. Two blurs sliced through the air, one black, and one silver. With each clash of sword on sword, a single note was played, adding to the melody that was the song of battle In his spectacular debut note was played, adding to the melody that was the song of battle In his spectacular debut novel, The Red Heir, Holden R Johnson has brought to life, a most gripping tale It is a tale of magic and mystery Of lies and deceit, and most importantly, it is a tale of betrayals, and Yes, I think I shall go ahead and cease my gushing here, lest I spoil something Indeed, familiar elements that could be seen throughout the fantasy genre, might be woven into the narrative, but I assure you, that this is a tale unlike any other This epic, albeit gritty, tale unfolds in the world Elemor , postdating the mysterious array of events that lead to it s loss of magic and apparent downfall, approximately one thousand years prior More spoilers As the description depicts, at present, the inhabitants of Elemor are plagued with an unfathomable set of occurrences The Doors Impassable Doors that have most haphazardly, begun appearing over the entirety of Elemor Doors that seemingly leak the Essence of magic , that they were previously lead to believe, had been eradicated from the world aside from a few items that require certain words of power to be spoken, in order to be activated Which raises the questions as to what exactly resided beyond said Doors, what initiated these occurrences, and why the aforementioned Doors came into being, to begin with Which, might I add, is all revealed, all in good time The beauty of The Red Heir, lies within it s enthralling world, races, religion, and all well thought out characters, great plot, and mind bogglingly constructed magic system The number of ways of how one might manipulate the Essence Magic on Elemor to do their bidding, is seemingly, quite limitless after all The story progressed at a reasonable pace, and maintained an unhindered flow, throughout the book I say this, for it allowed me to ease into the story, and keep pace with the narration, without being overwhelmed by any abrupt introductions of hard to grasp concepts, or unnecessary descriptions The main story alternates between the point of views of the characters Araine, Evral, Rax, anddominantly, Vall The great thing about these intriguing characters, is the fact that each of them possesses unique, and independent story lines Also, the subtle way of how the author managed to merge them together into an intricately intertwined weave by the end of the tale, is laudable as well For the most part, this tale is centered around Vall Red, a.k.a the infamous Terror of Helforn At first glance, one might perceive Vall as a dark, brooding, notorious and cold blooded assassin which he, undoubtedly is A magnificent cut throat, who s made it his profession to cut down his targets without mercy, all in a glorious flurry of dual wielding and skillfull manipulation of the Essence, with lethal grace which does come to pass on occasion, as well Hrrmm this is quite a predicament I m finding myself in The brilliantly placed flashback chapters, however, reveal that there isto the Terror of Helforn, than meets the eye They also make clear the sequence of events, that conduced to Vall becoming who and what he is, at the present, and addsdepth to his character, as they include details of his upbringing, and backstory as well While The Red Heir had strengths aplenty, the only flaws I found, were the apparent lack of maps of any kind, within the book, and the length of the story why was it so darn short I wantof this world I mean, it would have been absolutely fantastic if there were illustrations of Elemor, Helforn, the Pits and the location of the Doors and beyond, et cetera, et cetera not that it was a problem Since there wasn t much travel in the book Yet This book wasn t amongst my absolute favorites, per se, but it was definitely one of the best I have read in quite a while, and is a masterpiece in it s own right I m also super hyped for the release of the next installment of the World Reborn The Oppressor s Lie Without further ado, I would conclude, that this book is most assuredly for lovers of epic high fantasy Also, if you re into or obsessed with cough cough books that feature assassins as their protagonists, are fond of dark humor, like books with a touch of grimdark, then this book is definitely for you Postscriptum Be sure to check outand acquire a copy of The Red Heir as soon as possible for 0.99 I assure you, that you will not regret your decision I won t leave a rating, as I wrote it, however I did want to leave a note and thank all of those who are willing to give a new author a chance and read The Red Heir.I have a tell you much about the story itself I ll tell you my thoughts on it instead in order to avoid any spoiler I must say state there s a lot of points in the story that will definitely appeal to fantasy or RPG fans since in my head, it definitely envisioned like one The basic premise of the story is about Vall, our main character who s looking for his missing father and he ll do anything to achieve his objective As usual, there will be some twists and turns in his journey Accompanied with other great side characters and Holden s simple and easily understood writings, there s almost no way you won t understand what s happening in the book There s also some detailed and well placed flashback that givesenlightenment on the character background and development of Vall s Ranging from when he was 8 years old and his present 28 years old self, at the same time give some mystery to the main story The writings are fluid and I find the pacing really well paced, it s really fast for the 1st act which summed up first half of the book and then it goes slow for the first half of the 2nd act and finally explode in the last half of act 2 The best aspect of the book for me is the action scenes which Holden wrote with intricate precision and combined with its simple and great magic system called Essence, it simply leave me glued to the pages especially when its story were told from Vall s POV.I do have two cons on the book I find there s nothing new here for the genre I ve seen everything here before, from how the story played out, the magic system and some elements in the book that I can t tell and again, this could only be me but nothing in the story surprised me I ve managed to deduct the true identity of everyone who appears in the book from miles away These points are not a bad thing, the story is done really well and everything is written greatly to hook you to the plot However, I would love to find something new in the book I read.Another con I have is that I don t like the execution on Vall s and Araine relationship development, find it to be illogical After what Vall did in the first chapter of the book to her, it just doesn t make sense for both of them to start developing feeling for each other within several days being together Doesn t matter what the circumstances is, what Vall did were really bad For them to have insta love after that is just wrong imo.One minor complaint on the book which didn t affect my score is that I really wish the book have a detailed map It would be a much better experience if there s a map to increase the reader s imagination like almost all fantasy books these days The First Law trilogy had this problem but luckily there s a fan who made a detailed map of the world which were approved Abercrombie itself I hope in the future edition and sequels there will be one With that said, overall I really enjoyed the book The Red Heir is a great beginning to a trilogy, consisting of great plot, badass main character, simple writings, intriguing magic system and even though it doesn t provide anything new to the genre, it s still a pretty great read and in fact, I honestly think it s better than some fantasy books these days I can t wait to get my hands on book 2 to see the continuation of the story, especially after that cliffhanger There s definitely a lot of potential reserved for this trilogy which I hope Holden will live up to Attempt at a buddy read with my friend Petrik, who finished the Red Heir like two weeks before me D The Red Heir is an excellent debut novel by Holden R Johnson and this new abilities, mythological background, different religious theories and believes, different cultures cohabiting in precarious peace, special weapons, assassins and mysterious creatures And yet, despite all these influences Noctum for example reminded me of a certain town in the Riyria series, by Michael J Sullivan , the author crafted a coherent and interesting world, in its own right The action takes place in Elemor, a land once flourishing thanks to the Essence of magic that flowed freely and lent men and Loren powerful physical and telepathic abilities But magic is gone and the land is dying while mysterious doors to a place, some believe will save them all and others believe would bring doom to the world appear all over Elemor Only one person has the key to open the doors. The story is told from 3 main POVs Vall, the Terror and my favorite an assassin with an agenda, amazing abilities, a lot of unanswered questions and a painful past Araine, from the Talim, a rebel group with no allegiance but to their goddess I was not sure as what to think of Araine at first she wasdamsel in distress than capable warrior but I loved her quiet and progressive evolution as the story unfolded Evral, the wanderer an old man who spent his life traveling all around Elemor Evral represented, in appearance, a harmless grandpa figure but soon enough proved to be well informed and resourceful and carrying a mysterious mission view spoiler I truly hated this guy by the way I don t know why but he felt like the meanest and cruelest, in a deliberate wanton way, character of the book hide spoiler I enjoyed this read and I loved Vall I m quite fond of broken heroes or in this case anti heroes The writing style is very fluid with a lot of humor despite some dark moments and no unnecessary or lengthy descriptions I had some complaints though Especially when it came to the dialogues and the relations between the characters The dialogues felt quite rushed sometimes despite the high stakes I would have likedsubtlety, manipulation andarguing For example, view spoiler how could an old common man, coming out of nowhere, approach and convince so easily an experimented commander like Zaroff to reveal his secrets and follow him without question nor suspicion Or how could Vall, Terror of Helforn, drop his guard so easily around the Head and his henchmen hide spoiler These situations and the rushed dialogues were so frustrating at times and made some characters seem too credulous to be credible However, the plot, the dialogues and the characters improved a lot in the first part of the book and I really enjoyed that This is the first yet promising novel by Holden and I m totally convinced that his writing and his storytelling will improve a lot in the sequels which was already the case in the second part of the book Also, there will be a map in the next installment The Red Heir has raised a lot of questions and nothing and no one is like it seems at first glance I really hope we will get some answers in the next installments Beware, major spoilers behind the tags view spoiler Who was Reva and how did she create the other world What s the Loren s history And how are they different of humans Can the Essence within someone s body drain completely And if so, how does it regenerate Who was Kalor And what happened to him when Vall thought he was dead Why did he have the coin and leave it in plain sight How did Greil manage to manifest in Elemor while physically imprisoned behind the doors What happened to Dodge after he entered the door for the first time with Vall and how is it possible that Vall didn t recognize him Where does the mysterious blank book come from and why is it helping Araine Is it soul imbued like the Loren blades Are there other fantastical creatures like the Dawn Wolves How did Evral encounter his master for the first time hide spoiler But the most important question is Why do most fantasy writers start their female MCs names with Ar Araine in the Red Heir Arwen in LoTR Arista in Riyria Revelations Aria Stark in ASOIAF Arya in the Inheritance Cycle Okay, not funny, I know I ll let myself out as Petrik says DNov 22Because of Thanks
